Playing Card Meanings ( The Nature of the Minor Arcana)

After having studied the Cards of Truth course by Ernst Wilhelm some years ago and dabbled in this topic back and forth over the last years I kind of feel now I get the meanings of the cards or at least the chronology of their meanings.

I would thus like to share with you my take on the symbolic meanings of the 52 – playing cards that is also used in the Egyptian astrology system and is supposed to describe the nature of life.

These meanings can be used not only with regular poker cards but also with the Tarot cards. Unfortunately these meanings does not suit well in my opinion with the “traditional” imagery of the raider-waite tarot but it works very well with the marseille type of tarot decks.

Before I get into the meanings I want to explain the elements(suits) to you:

Fire is Shown by the Spades(wands/flames/seeds), Water corresponds to Hearts(Cups/fruits/berries), Clubs are corresponding to the Air element (leaves/swords) and lastly the Diamonds are Pentacles/Coin – the Earth element.

Spades are about the initial survival as manifesting spirit into flesh; the fire of the digestive system and hunger of the belly. Meaning it is mostly about the self, ones consciousness/psychology and immediate survival of the physical body(which is a manifested vehicle for the soul during our journey into the physical realm). It is connected to seeds and spring time – the shooting out of new growth(spirit manifesting into physical – new life).

Hearts are about our relationships and the “fruits” or the sweetness of being alive. It can be associated with being able to bond with others and the joy of co-creating.

The heart suit is connected to berries and fruit – everything that gives a feeling of love/pleasure/happiness. It is connected to summer time.

Clubs are about solving problems regarding survival and health of the physical and psychological body(Spades) or issues that occur in relationships/bonds with others(Hearts).

It is a very inspirational- and inventive- driven, mental element – “listening to the winds” by taking down the “thoughts” and/or inspiration from the heavens to try incorporating them on earth(with the purpose of solving a problem).

A metaphor for this could be like when the leaves on the tree is absorbing the Sun’s light incorporating it to form sugars and chlorophyll. Leaves also creates the oxygen in the air. The club element is connected to autumn/fall.

Diamonds are about the riches(for instance money), resources(skills, land or property) or worthwhile values(which has got many forms).

It can be minerals, the soil/lands(holding lots of minerals developed throughout hundreds and thousands of years), it can be beauty/strength or something physical that has with time gone through “crystallization” and become of long lasting(survival) value. Like a City. Gems, artifacts, Oil, product, excretion/fertilizer( which holds a lot of value and nutrition to the microorganisms of the soil which can ensure abundance of crops), a country or any sources of money – even about skills!! It is is about physical matter that is affecting many people and that is worthwhile(or not). It effects everyone. It holds value more than that of the immediate nature like the spades do that is mostly concerned with the immediate survival(present). It is also about being secured(for the future). It is connected to the winter(snowflakes/crystals/hardening).

The Astrological association to the Numbers ( the correct association)

´The Numbers 1-9 are the numbers of ;

Sun(birth/initiation),

Moon(fly together/bond),

Mars(will/struggle/push),

Mercury(securing/organizing/planning),

Jupiter(avertion/expansion),

Venus(fulfillment),

Saturn(destruction/loss),

Rahu (balancing/friendship)

Ketu(perfecting/ divine friendship)

(… in that given order).

The number 10 is both the beginning of something new and elevation card(the ecliptic).

The order of the planets follow the week days – Sunday(1) – to Saturday(7) which makes at least for me a lot of sense since in other languages the weekdays names resemble the names of the planets like for instance Mercredi in french means Wednesday which accurately is the day of Mercury and Mardi is the name for Tuesday which accurately is the day of Mars. Jeudi is of Thursday (jupiter) and Vendredi( friday) is of Venus.

The Jacks, Queens and Kings are representing the forces of

1-3 Brahma(Knight/Uranus/Mutable(initiating/creating), Electrifying/Instigatigating (Air/Eather)

4-6 Vishnu (Queen/Neptune/Fixed(Overseer/brewing/maintaining)), Grounding/ Nourishing (Water/Earth)

7-9 Siva (King/Pluto/Dual(purifying/destroying), Burning /Surrendering/Setting free (Fire/Eather)

So now when we are settled – let´s start!

  3. Hi there, thanks so much for these descriptions it helped me a lot.
I was wondering if I could ask you what you think. The King of Spades is a notoriously difficult/destructive energy. My Saturn card in the birth spread is King of Spades, contains the 7th & 8th cusp, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune.
Close relationships have been psychologically scarring and painful. As an adult now ive spent a lot of time healing the childhood trauma and wounds that were within me. Ive also learnt about the psychology of others and understand others now more deeply. I’m someone who used to yearn for this beautiful partnership, but often attracted broken, destructive individuals who had some deeply buried trauma that they played out with me in real time. I found it hard to walk away and create boundaries, was way too giving, since I could see where they had been wounded, I accepted things I shouldn’t have, but I’m so good at walking away now!
However, it does make me wonder, what now? The King of Spades still sits there as my main partnership card, I’m hoping to start dating again after being completely by myself for 10 years, I’m nervous. I mean can the King of Spades energy as a person manifest in a more healthy way? Since I am now healthier?
Any of your insights on this card in a partnership sense would be appreciated. I would love to do the cards course especially to know more about this card, but I can not afford it at the moment!

    1. Hello! I am glad the information has helped you. That is the whole point and good you have learnt from your earlier relationships and grown from them. Thats actually a part of all kings being mature and responsibile enough to take highroad through experience and wisdom. Healthy kings do very essential work in the world. Because remember every card in the 52 card deck has good and bad qualities. Usually immaturity and irresponsibility with these cards lead to lessons and hardships of many sorts. King of Spades has positive qualities which comes after maturity and the waking up from feeling like a victim (7 of spades) to take the highroad (9 of spades) with higher understanding from healing and inner work( 8 of spades).Since I dont know about your astrological chart I dont know if saturn actually sits in seventh house or eight. So I would guess because I am my self having saturn in the eight that that is the position of your saturn( lot of learning of trauma(8th house) if you have saturn in seventh usually indicated an older partner and/or delay in finding you right one. Thing is as soon as tou have hraled your self to a certain degree the readiness to meet the right person for you is atomatically being started and you cant go back into the same type of relationships you ve been in before. Have to leave for work now! Take care:)

      1. Hey!
Thanks so much for your response. I have Saturn in the 8th also! It rules my 7th house since I’m a cancer ascendant and 7th house is Capricorn. I won’t lie despite how much I’ve grown and learnt through these experiences, I still have moments of feeling like a victim of the things that happened to me, or days where a lot of sorrow comes up to the surface. The good news is these days are less and less frequent, and I can pull myself out of them more quickly, where as before I would sink into long periods of depression.
I was pleased to hear from you that all of the deep inner work does have an effect on what we then attract in the future. I know it’s a difficult card, and I have no idea what a healthy ‘King of Spades’ type of partner looks like, since in the past I attracted serious narcissists. But it’s just universal law, that as we change, what we attract also changes, and although I’m nervous, I have to believe in that to go forward. This time round I have better boundaries, a healthier mindset, I’m armed with psychological/spiritual knowledge, self knowledge – Let’s see what shows up lolll

      2. Sorry Have been busy. You know even without saturn in seventh or being the lord of seventh Saturn is incredibly important in having partnerships/relationship. Saturn gets its strength in Libra/ seventh house anf Libra is about diplomacy, equality, compromise which is what is needed in healthy relationships.
Also when it comes to timing of when you can meet your life partner the saturn transits are indicating natural timing for making the connection.
Check out Carol Allens Cycles of Saturn report. It is pretty intresting and very accurate. Though I have experienced her timing is a little off because she uses another calculation system but its really worth a read. Take care and good luck with everything:)

  4. Hey girl,
I literally always come back to this list of definitions you’ve created because they’re so good!

Recently I’ve been studying my birth spread and wanted to ask you, when it comes to the 8 of Diamonds, (this is my Venus card, it has a starved Jupiter in it, and my Jupiter card is the 10 of clubs, I’ve learnt about the harmful influence of Venus on Jupiter, so I get that part) but how does the 8 of diamonds manifest practically/materially? I have an 8 of hearts in my spread also so I get that ‘inner fulfilment’ energy of the 8, but we all have financial goals, like I have a dream of a house I’d like to build in the future. I just don’t get how a mystical card like the 8 of diamonds work on a material level, do you have any ideas on this?

    1. Hi there! Glad you find the interpretations helpful:)
I use the cards like tarot (with a card deck) or use that system in kala when looking at timing and compatibility. The year spreads can predict events and the energy under lying the coming events.
I especially find using the d60 year chart in cards of truth(if the time is correct it needs to be) and then follow the ruling planet( ie going through sun card of a new year look at where the sun sits that card will manifest)works. I think you have to go to timing rather than look at birth spread.
I have found I cannot use cards of truth for everything. When it comes to compatibility cards of truth can be helpful – same number or same cards as moon or atmarkarka planet seem to be a strong connection. in conjunction of the ordinary ”rules”as told by ernst. Planet of the running planetary period can be compared as well in both horoscope and cards of truth birth chart and year spred. For instance usually a person running the planet sitting in a certain for instance divine nakshatra meets someone with planetary period where the lord also is sitting in a divine nakshatra – match consciouness running/ruled timing of what you let in. Levels of consciousness can change alot during a life time when switch planetary periods.
Manifestations like property and such i am not too familiar with unfortunatly but there is a timing for everything. If you truely desire something authentically just make sure you have faith in the thought that one day it will come true and it will manifest at the perfect timing when you are ready on all levels to actually recieve it and ”take it on”.
Everything we have in life also has got a responsibility follwing it. its this responsibility and sacrifize we must accept as well to have things. The more one has the more responsibility we have to take on in order to keep it. So its good with healthy and proper grounds from the start so to say. And most important enjoy your self and your life and support yourself you deserve it.
Hope I answered your question. Happy friday!:)
